Books, whether colour or black and white generally have their text printed on a lighter weight of stock - often 70-90gsm uncoated stock. This both reduces bulk and the cost per unit of material. A perfect bound book will usually have a 250 - 300 gsm cover. A wiro bound book may not have a heavy cover, but usually has a blank card back and a protective clear plastic cover on either the front or both front and back. It's not advisable for a designer to run pictures across the gutter (the area between left and right pages) in books bound like this - it rarely looks effective.
